Open courses run at least every 2-3 months; private courses for groups as required.

The MMO refresher course covers the following syllabus.  This course is done by correspondence.  There are three elements to the refresher course: a presentation, practical exercises and post-training support. Between these three elements the following topics are covered:

• current legislation protecting marine mammals in UK waters
• current JNCC Guidelines for minimising the risk of injury and disturbance to marine mammals from seismic surveys
• the role of the MMO
• skills of the MMO - identification, distance estimation, bearings to sightings, recording behaviours, maintaining awareness of operations, recording position, recording weather
• use of the JNCC Marine mammal recording forms
• demonstration of the recording forms
• examples of recording forms to be completed by candidates
• examples of situations that may occur on a seismic survey - candidates have to describe an appropriate course of action to ensure compliance with the guidelines
• a selection of pictures of marine mammals for candidates to describe the main features of and attempt to identify
• opportunity for questions
• offer of further support by review of report(s) (optional)
