The MMO refresher course covers the following syllabus. This course is done by correspondence. There are three elements to the refresher course: a presentation, practical exercises and post-training support. Between these three elements the following topics are covered:
- current legislation protecting marine mammals in UK waters
- current JNCC Guidelines for minimising the risk of injury and disturbance to marine mammals from seismic surveys
- the role of the MMO
- skills of the MMO - identification, distance estimation, bearings to sightings, recording behaviours, maintaining awareness of operations, recording position, recording weather
- use of the JNCC Marine mammal recording forms
- demonstration of the recording forms
- examples of recording forms to be completed by candidates
- examples of situations that may occur on a seismic survey - candidates have to describe an appropriate course of action to ensure compliance with the guidelines
- a selection of pictures of marine mammals for candidates to describe the main features of and attempt to identify
- opportunity for questions
- offer of further support by review of report(s) (optional)
