This course is specifically aimed at personnel who will be acting as Marine Mammal Observers (MMOs) on seismic surveys in UK waters. The induction course introduces the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) Guidelines for minimising acoustic disturbance to marine mammals from seismic surveys and the principles and practice of seismic surveying. The course content aims to equip MMOs with all the necessary knowledge to fulfill this role effectively - it does not include elements that are not used in the course of work as an MMO, hence enabling the course to be completed in one day at minimal cost to delegates. The course trains delegates in the implementation of the JNCC guidelines, the reporting requirements, and the identification of marine mammals. There are no prerequisites for the course as the course content assumes no prior knowledge or experience. Post-training support is available to all induction course candidates. This is the original MMO training course; it is continually updated and is now in its eleventh year. The induction course has been reviewed and accepted by the JNCC. Attendance at the induction course is recorded on a register forwarded to the JNCC and on successful completion of the course delegates will receive a certificate.
