This course is specifically aimed at personnel who will be acting as Marine Mammal Observers (MMOs) on seismic surveys in UK waters. The MMO training course introduces the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) Guidelines for minimising the risk of injury and disturbance to marine mammals from seismic surveys and the principles and practice of seismic surveying. The course content aims to equip MMOs with all the necessary knowledge to fulfill this role effectively, including the implementation of the JNCC guidelines, the reporting requirements, and the identification of marine mammals. This is the original MMO training course; it is continually updated (the latest update includes the August 2010 revision of the JNCC guidelines and the January 2011 revision of the recording forms) and is now in its sixteenth year. The UK MMO training course has been reviewed and accepted by the JNCC.
Who can do the course?
Anyone - there are no prerequisites for the course as the course content assumes no prior knowledge or experience. However, those who will benefit most from the course and who are most likely to be successful in obtaining work as an MMO are those who have some prior marine mammal experience or other scientific experience. The course is presented in English, so delegates should have sufficient understanding of the English language to follow the presentation and complete the practice examples.
Please note that to work as an MMO offshore you will need appropriate offshore survival and medical fitness certificates. See Links for further information on centres that provide these.
Delegates receive:
- A course manual and comprehensive resource pack on CD
- A course certificate
- Attendance recorded on a register forwarded to JNCC
- Post-training support available
